My doctors have never told me about any kidney diets. I have also read on the Internet that high blood pressure can cause kidney disease. I have HBP. I also read that kidney disease can cause leg cramps. I was having the worst leg cramps of my life. No doctors could tell me how to cure them. Then I ended up in the hospital with kidney disease. When I got out I didn't have the leg cramps anymore. I asked the doctor why and he said he didn't know. Maybe I need another doctor?

Diet is an essential part of managing kidney disease. Since you have high blood pressure it is important for you to monitor you sodium intake. New guidelines suggest individuals with kidney disease limit their daily sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day. While that may sound like a lot, you may be surprised to find out how much sodium is hidden in packaged and convenience foods. I would recommend starting to evaluate your daily sodium intake by reading food labels. It is required for sodium content to be listed on the label, but remember that sodium content is listed for only one serving. It is important to look at the serving size listed on the product. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney failure and sodium has been shown to play a role in contributing to high blood pressure.
